The University of Macau (UM) and the organising committee of ‘FLTRP · ETIC Cup’ National English Debating Competition recently jointly held the 2022 FLTRP English Debate Open (Macao), which was also the Inaugural Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area Universities Debating Championship. The event attracted over 200 debaters from renowned universities such as Peking University, Fudan University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The UM English Debating Team won the championship and two UM debaters were named the first overall best speaker and the grand final best speaker, as well as the second overall best speaker, respectively.

Founded in 1997, the ‘FLTRP · ETIC Cup’ has become a nationally representative English debate competition after 25 years. Paul Pang, dean of students of UM, delivered a speech in the opening ceremony. According to him, the UM English Debating Team has participated in this tournament for more than ten years and has achieved excellent results, winning three championships, two second-place prizes, one third-place prizes, and four first prizes.

A team formed by Hoi Chon Kit, a fourth-year student in the Honours College (HC), Cheng Yu Tung College, and the Faculty of Education, and Tang Cheok Man, a second-year student in the HC, Moon Chun Memorial College, and the Faculty of Social Science, won the championship and the Wild Card to the 24th ‘FLTRP•ETIC Cup’ National English Debating Competition. Tang was named the first overall best speaker and the grand final best speaker, while Hoi Chon Kit was named the second overall best speaker.
