In November 2010 and July 2018, UM obtained approval from the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China to establish three State Key Laboratories, which were restructured in January 2025 into:

It focuses on research into the mechanisms and quality of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), and is dedicated to advancing the modernisation and internationalisation of TCM, supporting the development of the TCM industry in the nation and Macao, and enhancing the translation of research achievements based on clinical value and market demand.

It mainly conducts cutting-edge research on various electronic systems with two main research emphases, including the analog-to-digital converters and low-power RF chips. The laboratory also actively develops research directions in power management and microfluidic chips.

It is the nation’s first state key laboratory dedicated to the field of the Internet of Things for smart cities. By advancing fundamental theories, algorithms, and systems, it seeks to develop exemplary smart city applications. It carries out research on five key areas: intelligent sensing and network communication, urban big data and intelligent technology, smart energy, intelligent transportation, and urban safety and disaster prevention.
