Students from the University of Macau (UM) won first and second prizes in the tertiary essay category of ‘Legacy in Ink & Light: The Essay and Microfilm Competition for Exploring 5,000 Years of Chinese Culture and Financial History’.
The competition, which was jointly organised by the Centre for Macau Studies and the Centre for Chinese History and Culture at UM, as well as Well Link Bank, attracted nearly 200 submissions across the junior secondary, senior secondary, and tertiary categories. The awards ceremony took place at UM on 15 March, where Geng Qiang and Wei Yihe were awarded first and second prizes respectively in the tertiary essay category.
Agnes Lam, director of the UM Centre for Macau Studies, said that the competition aimed to encourage students to reflect on how culture has evolved and been passed down through financial changes throughout history, while also promoting cultural heritage through writing and filmmaking. Huang Ruisheng, executive director and CEO of Well Link Bank, expressed hope that students would learn to innovate while preserving tradition and transform their understanding of history and culture into constructive thinking in the process.
