The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau University Alliance Annual Meeting and Presidents’ Forum 2021 was held today (22 November). The event involved both in-person and virtual elements. During the meeting, heads and representatives of universities in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao exchanged ideas on how to strengthen collaboration to promote higher education development in the region.

At the Presidents’ Forum, rector of the University of Macau, Yonghua Song chaired a discussion session on promoting collaboration in education and creating an international education demonstration centre in the Greater Bay Area (GBA). According to him, the GBA has many unique advantages, with a high degree of openness and the coexistence of multiple cultures; Member universities of the alliance should make the most of the GBA’s strengths to develop a new model of international education.

Established in 2016, the university alliance was initiated by University of Macau, Sun Yat-sen University, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Sun Yat-sen University serves as the chair of the alliance while UM and CUHK serve as the vice chairs. So far, 41 universities in the GBA have joined the alliance. Its member universities hold academic forums and exchange activities on a regular basis to promote collaboration in scientific research and technological innovation, in order to nurture outstanding professionals for the GBA.
