A team from the University of Macau (UM) State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City, formed by PhD students Chen Hao and Wang Xianbo, recently won a first prize in the innovation category of a national big data mining competition. The team also won a first prize in the regional competition for contestants from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and South China. Yang Zhixin, an associate professor in UM’s Faculty of Science and Technology, received an Outstanding Instructor Award. The award-winning project is a hierarchical cascade forest-based deep learning model for real-time monitoring of the condition of non-stationary tunnel ventilation system in Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. Jointly hosted by 15 universities, the national competition attracted over 1,000 teams, with a total of over 4,000 participants. Three first prizes, six second prizes, and ten third prizes were awarded in the innovation category. This project is supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology (file number: 2019YFB1600700) and the Science and Technology Development Fund, Macao SAR (file number: 0018/2019/AKP and SKL-IOTSC(UM)-2021-2023).
