The 3-day conference attracts renowned scholars and researchers from around the world.

The Science and Technology Development Fund of Macao SAR (FDCT) last night held the 32nd International Conference on Distributed Computing Systems (ICDCS) Welcome Dinner to welcome more than two hundred scholars and researchers from prestigious universities and research institutions from around the world, including Princeton University, the University of California, Los Angeles, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Tsinghua University, Google, and Microsoft Research.

Guests of honour at the welcome dinner included Kou Ming, deputy director general of the Economic Affairs Department, Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in Macao SAR; Chan Wan Hei, member of the Administrative Committee of FDCT; Wei Zhao, rector of the University of Macau (UM) and general co-chair of ICDCS; founder of ICDCS Mike Liu and his wife; Zhang Xiaodong, Steering Committee chair of ICDCS; Prof. Ten H. Lai, general co-chair of the 32nd ICDCS; Xavier Defago and Wang-Chien Lee, programme co-chairs of ICDCS; Weimin Zheng, director general of the China Computer Federation; Nionel Ni, dean of Fok Ying Tung Graduate School, HKUST; Fhilip Chen, dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, UM; and Ivan Stojmenovic from the University of Ottawa, Canada.

Wei Zhao said at the welcome dinner that during the one year of preparation the committee accepted a total of seventy-one conference papers and ninety-two workshop papers, and held three keynote speeches, twenty-first meetings and eight workshops, laying a good groundwork for the 32nd ICDCS. He stressed that ICDCS is a high-level international conference with a fine tradition, adding that he believes this year’s conference will have a far-reaching impact on the development of distributed computing as well as on exchange of ideas on the topic. Rector Wei Zhao also shared information about UM’s future development and the advantages Macao enjoys in terms of science and technology development, and encouraged participants to enhance cooperation with UM.

Chan Wan Hei, member of the Administrative Committee of FDCT, said that ICDCS is a prestigious annual conference organized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, which advocates shared use of rare resources and computer load balancing. He said this year’s conference will explore the popular issues, difficulties and solutions in distributed computing, which he believes will benefit the participants and the IT sector of Macao, and give a boost to Macao’s development in science and technology. Chan shared FDCT’s success in 2011, and expressed willingness to enhance collaboration with participants and the scientific community in Macao.

Zhang Xiaodong, chair of ICDCS Steering Committee, said that “distributed computing system” used to be a cutting-edge subject but has now become a mainstream subject. He mentioned three challenges ICDCS needs to address. The first challenge is to increase the value of the conference to attract more participants with the desire to learn from other participants rather than just publish papers. The second challenge is to make the conference less academic and more practical in order to help the industry solve practical problems. The third challenge is to return to mainstream and newer subjects.
