Prof. Hao Yufan will join Brookings Institution’s Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies for its spring 2012 fellowship programme

Prof. Hao Yufan, dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, University of Macau (UM), will join Brookings Institution’s Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies (CNAPS) for its spring 2012 fellowship programme. The research theme for the 2011-2012 fellowship year is “organizing for national security decision-making.” The other three visiting fellows for this spring group include Prof. Kwei-Bo Huang, director of the Centre for Foreign Policy Studies at the College of International Affairs, National Chengchi University, Taiwan; Nguyen Nam Duong, assistant director-general of the Institute for Foreign Policy and Strategic Studies in the Diplomatic Academy of Vietname; and Nyamosor Tuya, former foreign minister of Mongolia.

Founded in 1916, the Washington-based Brookings Institution is a non-profit organization dedicated to the studies of public policies. It is considered by many to be the most influential, most quoted and most trusted think tank. CNAPS was established in 1998, and it conducts research, analysis, and exchange designed to enhance policy development and understanding on the pressing political, economic, and security issues facing Northeast Asia and the U.S. in the region. Each year, CNAPS selects—following a competitive application process—up to eight visiting fellows for its spring and autumn fellowship programmes.

Prof. Hao’s areas of expertise include Sino-U.S. relations, Chinese foreign policy making, Chinese politics, and Macao politics. For this fellowship programme at CNAPS, apart from conducting research and exchange on “organizing for national security decision-making”, Prof. Hao will also research and write about “Dilemma of Openness: Societal Factors in China’s National Security and Foreign Policy Decision Making”. Prof. Hao said he hoped to achieve the purpose of academic interaction and exchange through this programme, and expressed gratitude for UM’s support to his academic studies.
