Strive Forward and Achieve Beyond.

‘Strive Forward and Achieve Beyond’ is the theme of the University of Macau’s (UM) 45th anniversary. The phrase ‘Strive Forward’ originates from the chapter Conduct of the Scholar in the Chinese classic Book of Rites. Its original meaning—steadfast practice leads to far-reaching achievements—celebrates perseverance, determination, and freedom from empty rhetoric. It reminds us that lasting success can only be achieved through sustained and purposeful action. Today, we draw on this enduring wisdom and imbue it with contemporary meaning: only through continuous exploration and courageous innovation can we open new horizons and achieve beyond expectations. This spirit not only defines this milestone year, but also encapsulates UM’s journey over the past four and a half decades—and illuminates the path ahead.

For UM, steadfastness has always been rooted in a clear academic vision, a deep sense of social responsibility, and the strong support of the country and the SAR government. From its early days as the University of East Asia, through its transformative relocation to the main campus in Hengqin and subsequent leap in development, to its emergence today as a globally competitive and internationally recognised university, UM has remained unwavering in its commitment to advancing as a comprehensive research-oriented university of international standing. Over the past 45 years, we have steadily advanced higher education and research innovation, contributing intellectual strength to both regional and national development.

In recent years, this spirit of perseverance has been fully embodied in our research endeavours. UM has continuously strengthened its research ecosystem, expanded its infrastructure, and provided robust support for cutting-edge scholarship. Central to this progress is the university’s ‘3+3+3+3’ strategic research layout: three state key laboratories, three emerging research fields, three interdisciplinary research areas, and three research platforms in the humanities and social sciences. This well-structured research system has consolidated high-level research capacity and generated a series of impactful achievements in key areas. Our academic influence and international reputation have continued to grow. More importantly, we have aligned research innovation with societal needs—supporting Macao’s economic diversification and contributing to the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Forty-five years marks both a milestone and a new beginning. With gratitude for the past and confidence in the future, UM moves forward with renewed purpose. We will continue to uphold our academic ideals and deepen innovation-driven development. By cultivating higher-calibre talent and advancing higher-level research, we will serve the country’s development strategy and contribute meaningfully to society. Guided by perseverance and inspired by vision, UM will continue to strive forward and achieve beyond.
