Numbers speak louder than words. In this issue of “New Campus Updates”, let’s look at some relocation-related numbers so we can get some idea about the challenges of the preparations for the relocation within a relatively short time frame.

Pre-relocation Preparations

Throughout the relocation process, the university will follow four principles—(1) minimise the impact on teaching and research activities of the university, (2) ensure the health and safety of the staff and students, (3) be pratical, and carry out the relocation in an orderly manner, and (4) be efficient and costeffective. Before the relocation, the university needs to enter the new campus to complete a series of post-delivery works, including outfitting labs, lobbies of the various buildings, restaurants and kitchens; installation and testing of campus computer networks and information equipment; installation of WiFi network, telephone system, water, electricity and natural gas metres; installation of AV systems and split-type air conditioners in classrooms and meeting rooms; installation of kitchen cabinets in residential units; procurement of furniture; as well as transportation, medical, security and cleaning arrangements. Refer to the tables below for details.

The tables below give us a glimpse of the challenges of the preparation for the relocation. Apart from good planning and risk management on the part of the university, it also requires the participation and support of all UM members to make sure that the relocation proceeds in a smooth and orderly manner.
