The University of Macau (UM) English Debating Team recently participated in the World University Debating Championship (WUDC) 2021 and became the only team from China to advance to the round of 16 in the English as a second language (ESL) category. It is not only the best result of the UM team in this competition; it also represents the best result Chinese universities have ever achieved at this event in the past three years. WUDC is the world’s largest debate competition. Hosted by South Korea, this year’s event was held in a hybrid format that combined both online and in-person elements to allow students from around the world to participate. The competition attracted over 370 teams from different countries and regions. Kiki Liew Fook Khei, a member of the UM team and a third-year student in UM’s Honours College, Faculty of Science and Technology, and Shiu Pong College, was ranked the sixth best speaker of English as a foreign language.
