The University of Macau (UM) English Debating Team recently won the championship in the China Universities Debating Championship 2021 (Southern China Regional). The team will compete with winning teams from Northern, Western and Eastern China in the national final to be held in mid-July.

The event attracted approximately 60 teams from various universities in the region. During the two-day event, the teams competed in 71 debate sessions on various topics, including politics, economics, and culture. After five rounds of intense debate contests, the UM team ranked first and advanced to grand final. The team eventually won the championship after beating their counterparts from Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen), and Shantou University. Zhou Yongyi, a fourth-year student in UM’s Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS) and a member of the Honours College (HC) and Lui Che Woo College, as well as Tang Cheok Man, a first-year student in the FSS and a member of the HC and Moon Chun Memorial College, shared the title of ‘Overall Best Speaker’. Tang also won the tile of ‘Best Speaker’ in the grand final.
