The University of Macau (UM) organised a three-day new campus trial use activity from 21 August to 23 August after one of the buildings on the new campus passed quality inspection, in order to test the relevant equipment and facilities to make sure that everything operates properly before officially relocating UM members to the new campus. 128 UM students, faculty members, alumni and top management participated in the trial use activity. Overall, participants were very pleased with the arrangements and the facilities on the new campus, saying that everything was operating smoothly without any major problems.

Suggestions from the participants are mainly about cold air from air conditioners not being cold enough, noise of the refrigerators, and the locations of some furniture. Daren Wu, who majors in translation studies in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, said that he found the new campus to be larger than he had imagined and the architectural mix of Lingnan and southern European styles to be very unique. He looks forward to officially moving to a residential college because he believes residential college experience will give him more opportunities to interact with students from different backgrounds and faculties.

Participants had a fully packed schedule during the trial use period. They needed to test the water and electricity supply systems, bathroom facilities, lifts, and other facilities. They participated in a fire drill to help test the new campus’s capacity to handle contingencies. They also visited the main buildings, played group games, and listened to UM’s University Council Chair Tse Chi Wai sharing the background information about the new campus.
