Deqiang Li, UM PhD student won second prize (Left)

The 2009 Annual Meeting of Chinese Pharmaceutical Association was held recently in Changsha, Hunan. Deqiang Li, PhD student from the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS) of the University of Macau (UM), won the second prize at the meeting with his paper titled “Rapid Detection and Identification of α-glucosidase Inhibitors from herbal extract by LC-DAD-MS-BCD”.

Organized by the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association, the meeting is an influential and high-level academic conference in the field of pharmaceutical sciences in the Mainland. More than 1,800 pharmaceutical experts participated in the meeting, including Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Mr.Guowei Sang, President of the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association, and his fellows, leaders and experts from the Ministry of Health, Health Department of the General Logistics Department, the State Food and Drug Administration of the People’s Republic of China, and the China Association for Science and Technology. The conference received more than 600 papers, among which about 200 papers were selected for presentation at 7 specialized sessions. Eventually, 45 excellent papers were awarded prizes, among which, 3 were awarded first prizes, 15 were awarded second prizes and 27 were awarded third prizes.

Sponsored by the Research Committee of UM, Deqiang Li’s research project “Rapid Detection and Identification of α-glucosidase Inhibitors in herbal extract by LC-DAD-MS-BCD” has provided a novel method for the active compounds screening and the quality control marker selection of Chinese medicines. Deqiang Li is supervised by Associate Professor Shaoping Li from ICMS, whose postgraduate students were also respectively awarded third prize of excellent paper in 2006 and 2008 Annual Meeting of Chinese Pharmaceutical Association.
