The Department of English of the University of Macau will host a special open lecture by Professor Edwin Thumboo, one of Asia’s foremost poets writing in English. The talk will be held in Auditorium II of the University of Macau Library at 6:00 pm on 27 March 2008 (Thursday).

Professor Thumboo will examine the role of English literature and literature written in English in the globalized world. The talk will be relevant to anyone interested in English literature and the connections between English, creative writing, and the postcolonial societies that nurture such efforts.

Edwin Thumboo is one of Singapore’s most distinguished poets. He has been called the ‘Father of Singapore Poetry’ and ‘the unofficial poet laureate of Singapore’. His poetry and other writings contributed much to the shaping and definition of not only Singapore’s English Language poetic canon, but also this island nation’s sense of identity and culture. He is Emeritus Professor (1997) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) where he is also Professorial Fellow.

The talk, open to the general public, will be followed by a tea reception in the foyer of the Auditorium II. For further details please visit UM’s Department of English homepage at www.umac.mo/fsh/de or email to mychiu@um.edu.mo.
