 UM English Debating Team takes

the 1st runner-up at a national

English debating competition

The English Debating Team (UMEDT) of the University of Macau (UM) took the 1st runner-up after defeating some 120 teams who are from different universities in mainland China, Macao and Hong Kong at the 15th “FLTRP-BOC Cup” National English Debating Competition held in Beijing between 7 and 14 May, 2011.

Accompanied by senior member Mr. Omoleye Segun Emmanuel (year-3 student of the Department of English), the debaters of UMEDT, Mr. Lam Chi Un (year-2 student of the Department of Communication) and Ms. Wang Mao Wei (year-3 student of the Department of Finance and Business Economics), successfully broke into the finals together with other teams from Nankai University, Tsinghua University and Beijing University of Technology after taking twelve rounds of ferocious debates. In the end, UMEDT got the 1st runner-up award.

With this excellent performance, UMEDT continues to maintain its top ranking among the Chinese debate teams. In recent year, UMEDT has achieved outstanding performance in the annual national debating competition, proving UMEDT’s debating skills are up to par with other renowned universities such as Peking University, Fudan University, Tsinghua University, City University of Hong Kong and the University of Hong Kong. Once again, this award reflects the UM’s implementation of Whole Person Education has helped students to nurture motivations in learning and abilities in independent thinking.

The “FLTRP-BOC Cup” is an annual event jointly organized by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP), the Cambridge University Press (CUP), International Debate Education (IDEA), China English Language Education Association (CELEA), English Speaking Union (ESU) and English Language Learning Monthly. It is the most prestigious and influential national English debating competition.
