Yonghua Song, rector of the University of Macau (UM), attended the first symposium on the development of new research universities on 19 October. During the seminar, he joined leaders from universities across the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong to discuss the features and development trajectories of new research universities, aiming to promote their high-quality development and build China into a leading country in education.

Speaking at the symposium, Song said that UM actively promotes innovation and exploration in higher education. With the establishment of a campus in the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, the university aims to support the development of an international education demonstration zone, an international centre for innovation and technology, and an international hub for high-calibre talent in the region. Song added that UM will leverage its international faculty, modern governance system, and distinctive resource allocation to meet strategic needs, nurture top talent, and pioneer new research paradigms, thereby fostering synergistic development between its two campuses.

In addition, Song, together with other UM representatives—including Ge Wei, vice rector of UM; Xu Cheng-Zhong, dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology; and Yang Zhixin, executive deputy director of the Hengqin UM Institute for Science and Education Development—visited Shenzhen University of Advanced Technology. The two parties held in-depth discussions on new models for talent cultivation and scientific innovation, as well as potential areas of cooperation between the two universities.
