To enhance the understanding of Chinese literature among Macao’s students and faculty and promote traditional Chinese culture, the Student Affairs Office of the University of Macau (UM) invited renowned writer, literary critic, and scholar Zhang Jinjiang to deliver a series of talks on the Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shan Hai Jing) at UM and Escola Hou Kong. The talks were attended by over 2,000 students and faculty members.
Zhang delivered three talks, where he discussed the connection between the Classic of Mountains and Seas and the origins of Chinese deities, as well as its historical links to the Chinese poet Qu Yuan, various figures in Chinese literature, classic Chinese novels, and Sanxingdui relics. He also shared the inspiration behind his book series New Interpretation of Shan Hai Jing. During the discussion session, Zhang answered questions from students and faculty, offering unique insights and deepening the audience’s understanding of the Classic of Mountains and Seas and Chinese culture. The talks were jointly organised by Cheng Yu Tung College, Cheong Kun Lun College, and Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam College of UM.
