The third Jiangsu-Hong Kong-Macao Forum on Classical Literature and Culture took place at the University of Macau (UM) on 10 and 11 May. It was jointly organised by the Centre for Chinese History and Culture (CCHC) and the Department of Chinese Language and Literature of UM’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH), with assistance from the Jiangsu Ancient Literature Society, the School of Liberal Arts of Nanjing University, and the Department of Chinese and History of City University of Hong Kong. The forum brought together 44 experts, professors, and young scholars from universities and academic institutions in Jiangsu, Hong Kong, and Macao for in-depth discussions on ancient Chinese literature and culture.
The opening ceremony was moderated by Tang Chon Chit, professor in UM FAH. Zhang Yan, director of UM CCHC, delivered a welcome address to all attendees. Zhang Jian, associate dean of UM FAH, encouraged young scholars to uphold the humanistic values that are embodied in literary classics and contribute to the development of the field. Xu Jie, president of the Jiangsu Ancient Literature Society, expressed hope that the forum would promote the integration of tradition and innovation and safeguard the continuation of cultural heritage.
This year’s forum focused on the canonisation of Chinese literature. It featured five plenary sessions and two panel discussions. During the plenary sessions, scholars discussed and analysed Chinese literary works from different perspectives, while UM doctoral students from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature presented their research papers during the panel discussions. The closing ceremony was moderated by Wang Sihao, associate professor in UM FAH.
