At the tenth Macao Inter-Tertiary Debate Competition (English Debates), which was organized by the Tertiary Education Services Office (GAES), and held from 12 to 14 October, at the Institute for Tourism Studies (IFT), four teams from the University of Macau (UM) won the championship and four individual awards, including the Best Debater Award in the grand final, as well as three out of the five Best Debater Awards in the preliminary round. This is the fifth time since 2008 that UM English Debating Team has won the championship at this competition. Macao Polytechnic Institute, Macau University of Science and Technology, the Institute for Tourism Studies, the University of Saint Joseph and the City University of Macau also participated in the competition.

Judges commented that each team made full preparation for the competition and during the debates demonstrated quick response and a solid grasp of knowledge of different realms.

The competition aims to encourage university students to pay attention to a variety of issues, including current international affairs, economic and trade development, art, culture, people’s lives, etc. It also hopes to help participants improve their ability to think critically and express fluently in English.
