The 40th Portuguese Language Summer Programme, organised by the Department of Portuguese in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Macau (UM), is now open for applications. The application deadline is 5 June. The programme is open to applicants worldwide and welcomes learners of Portuguese at all levels, including absolute beginners.

Launched by the UM Department of Portuguese in 1986, the Portuguese Language Summer Programme has long been a key initiative in nurturing bilingual talent at UM. This year’s programme runs from 6 to 24 July and features language courses, thematic classes, and a variety of cultural and art workshops. The programme is designed not only to enhance participants’ linguistic proficiency and socio-cultural understanding, but also to strengthen their cross-cultural awareness.

Aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), the language courses are offered at four levels: Beginner (A1), Elementary (A2), Intermediate (B1-B2), and Advanced (B2-C1). Participants can select the appropriate level based on their learning experience and language proficiency to ensure optimal learning outcomes. Language classes run from 9:00am to 1:00pm, totalling 60 hours of teaching. In addition to the language classes, participants can join a variety of workshops in the afternoon and evening based on their interests. The workshops cover literature, history, culture, dance, and film, and are designed to immerse participants in the charm of Portuguese-speaking cultures.

All teaching materials for language classes and cultural activities are provided free of charge. Participants who attend at least 80% of the classes will receive a certificate upon completion, which will include their final assessment grade. Interested individuals may apply at: https://fah.um.edu.mo/dportsummerprogramme2026-40th/. Applicants from outside Macao and those requesting on-campus accommodation must be at least 18 years old, while applicants from Macao must be at least 15 years old.
