Yonghua Song, rector of the University of Macau (UM), attended the 2026 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Forum held by the Counsellor’s Office of the State Council on 8 May. During the event, he delivered a keynote address and engaged in in-depth discussions with representatives and experts from governments, enterprises, and universities across the Greater Bay Area (GBA).

In his keynote address, Song discussed UM’s strategies and initiatives for establishing the Greater Bay Area as an innovation hub. He noted that the university is actively supporting the development of the Macao-Hengqin international education (university) town, with the campus in the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin to be fully operational by 2029. With two campuses and five new faculties, UM will continue to strengthen its academic structure, attract international faculty members, and nurture high-calibre talent. Song also mentioned UM’s efforts in promoting industry-academia integration and the internationalisation of Chinese medicine.

Speaking at a sub-forum on the integrated development of education, technology, and talent in the Greater Bay Area, Chen Guokai, executive deputy director of the University of Macau Advanced Research Institute in Hengqin, proposed the establishment of comprehensive support mechanisms tailored to cross-border institutions and talent.
