The University of Macau (UM) today (9 November) held a lecture titled ‘Marine Monitoring and Forecasting Systems for the Greater Bay Area’, as part of university lecture series in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the university. Chen Dake, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and director of Southern Marine Science and Engineering Guangdong Laboratory (Zhuhai), was the speaker. Yonghua Song, rector of UM and director of the university’s State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City (IOTSC), gave a welcome speech. According to Rector Song, UM established the IOTSC and the Centre for Regional Oceans to provide an academic and scientific foundation for oceanography studies. During the talk, Academician Chen analysed how the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, as one of the key areas to be developed in China’s national strategy, has been threatened by various natural disasters in recent years. He also discussed the necessity of enhancing regional marine monitoring and forecasting systems in order to prevent these disasters, protect the environment, and promote sustainable development of the Greater Bay Area.
