The University of Macau (UM) today (3 November) held a talk titled ‘Quantum Physics and Modern Information Technology’. The keynote speaker Xue Qikun is the vice president of Tsinghua University, a member of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the deputy director of the Science and Technology Commission of the Ministry of Education. During the talk, Xue discussed the latest research findings in physics and the relationships among physics, information technology, and social development. Xue presented two effects in physics, the superconductivity effect and the Quantum Hall effect, and discussed the factors that may lead to another industrial revolution and advancement in civilisation. Xue also gave an account of the key research direction of physics and its possible impacts on our future life.
