Ms. Hong Qian has been awarded a Ph.D. scholarship by Eurasia-pacific Uninet
UM Ph.D. student Ms. Hong Qian will go to Universität Wien, Austria to study the translation of public notices in Chinese, English and German languages on a Ph.D. scholarship by Eurasia-pacific Uninet. Eurasia-pacific Uninet scholarships are mainly awarded to master’s and Ph.D. students with outstanding academic performance and foreign language proficiency. Its evaluation process is very rigorous. Ms. Hong Qian’s being awarded the scholarship represents recognition of UM students’ research ability and foreign language proficiency.

Ms. Hong Qian is a Ph.D. student of linguistics specializing in Translation Studies. Next January she is going to Universität Wien for a 9-month research project on the Uninet Scholarship. She expressed her gratitude to Prof. Zhang Meifang, her other faculty staff and the University, saying that the application would not have been successful without their unreserved support.

Among over a dozen designated Austrian universities, Ms. Hong Qian picked Universität Wien. According to her, first of all, the university has a Translation Studies Centre and many world-renowned scholars, which will greatly benefit her study. Besides, the university has a long history of over 600 years. Founded in the year 1365, it has produced more than 20 Nobel laureates to date. It is also one of the best universities in Europe. Everything considered, Ms. Hong Qian believed Universität Wien should be the best choice for her.

Her research at Universität Wien will focus on the translation of public notices in Chinese, English and German languages. She will study whether there are terminological expressions in some public notices by comparing Chinese/English public notices in Macao with English/German public notices in Germany in order to provide some reference for the future translation and study of public notices.

Now she is busy categorizing the Chinese/English public notices collected in Macao to facilitate her upcoming study. She said: “Just like we can never fish in the air, we can never conduct a study without extensive research. We must read a lot of literature and observe the world carefully so as to develop our own viewpoints. Sometimes many new ideas may pop up during the research process, but we must focus on the chosen subject. Otherwise, we will probably end up with nothing achieved. In a word, persistence and focus are indispensable for academic research.”

Hong Qian’s attitude towards study has been greatly influenced by Prof. Zhang Meifang. She still remembers what Prof. Zhang said to her on her first day of study: “if you want to achieve success at anything, you must focus on it!” Qian mentioned when admitted by both UM and the City University of Hong Kong as a doctoral student, she chose UM because of Prof. Zhang’s mentoring and encouragement during the interview. She plans to pursue a postdoctoral study in translation after completing her doctoral degree courses.
