The University of Macau (UM) has offered special admission to the two young men from Jiangxi province, mainland China, who earlier stopped a knife attack on a bus on their way to take the university entrance examination. The incident not only left the two young men, Liu Yanbing and Yi Zhengyong, injured, but also caused them to miss the university entrance exam. After learning about the news, UM closely followed the recovery progress of the two students and expressed concern over their missed opportunity for the university entrance exam. With the authorisation of the Senate’s General Affairs Committee, UM established a working group headed by Vice Rector Prof Fan Xitao, to carry out special-admission-related work.

The working group visited Jiangxi province on 16 June and 24 June. After gaining a comprehensive understanding of the two students’ learning abilities, academic interests, academic performance in high school, and their preferred universities, and upon the recommendation of their high school, UM issued rector-signed acceptance letters to the two students on 24 June. The two students expressed their strong interest in studying at UM, saying that they would rise to the challenge. UM also plans to make appropriate arrangements about their studies to help them adjust to living and studying at UM as soon as possible.

In recent years, UM has experienced rapid development, thanks to the great support of the central government and the Ministry of Education. UM is committed to fulfilling its mission to nurture high-quality graduates for the country. This is the first time since its founding that UM has offered special admission to any student. UM hopes that receiving early acceptance letters could help ease the pressure on the two students who are set to take a separate university entrance exam before they fully recover from their injuries. UM also hopes that the two students, who showed courage and bravery by stopping the knife attack on the bus, can have the opportunity to come to the Macao SAR and experience UM’s unique “4-in-1” model of education.
