FED Dean Prof. Fan Xitao has been selected Fellow of the American Educational Research Association

Prof. Fan Xitao, dean of the Faculty of Education (FED) and a chair professor at the University of Macau (UM), has been selected to be AERA Fellow (American Educational Research Association), in recognition of “exceptional scientific or scholarly contributions to education research.” Prof. Fan is the second scholar of Chinese origin AERA’s history to receive this prestigious honour.

Founded in 1916, AERA is committed to advancing educational research and its practical application. It has 25,000 researcher scholars as its members worldwide. AERA initiated its Fellows Program in 2008, for the purpose of honouring education researchers with exceptional contributions to education research and substantial research accomplishments. So far, only about two percent of AERA’s 25,000 researchers and scholars have received this highest honour from AERA.

At this time, of all the AERA Fellows, Prof. Fan is the only one in the Greater China region. In the history of AERA Fellows program, he is one of the only two scholars originally from the Greater China to receive this honour. Prof. Fan said he felt greatly honoured to have been selected to be AERA Fellow, which represents international recognition of his academic achievements. He promised that in the future he would continue to work hard to lead UM’s FED towards new heights.

Before joining UM in 2011, Prof. Fan held numerous professional positions at several universities in the U.S. and mainland China, including his endowed chair professorship in the University of Virginia, a top public university in the U.S. He is internationally well-known for his research work and publications in educational research methodology, measurement and quantitative (especially multivariate) methods. He served as the editor-in-chief of Educational and Psychological Measurement for two terms, the first Chinese scholar to serve as editor of a major scholarly journal in the field of education in the U.S.
