The University of Macau (UM) and SenseTime recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at the first BEYOND International Technology Innovation Expo in Macao. According to the MOU, both parties will combine their strengths to begin strategic collaboration in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), smart city development, smart travel, and talent development, in order to promote collaborative innovation.

During the ceremony, Jerome Yen, head of the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship of UM’s Institute of Collaborative Innovation, and Shang Hailong, managing director of SenseTime, signed the MOU on behalf of UM and SenseTime, respectively. The signing was witnessed by Lou Pak Sang, director of the Education and Youth Development Bureau; Claudia Xu, vice rector of UM; Huang Zhihu, director-general and vice president of the Macau Chinese Enterprises Association; and Zhang Shaoting, vice president of SenseTime. Guests who attended the signing ceremony also included Davis Fong, director of UM’s Institute for the Study of Commercial Gaming, and Antony Si Tou, director of UM’s Information and Communication Technology Office.

UM and SenseTime hope to work hand-in-hand on the development and application of core AI technologies to benefit the various industries and innovation development in Macao. In addition, both parties hope to attract high-level professionals and world-class researchers and innovation teams from around the world, in order to realise the goal of producing high-quality research results that are original, groundbreaking, and influential in the academia.

UM has always been committed to promoting technological advancement and social development in Macao. In line with the policy objectives of the SAR government and to grasp opportunities brought up by the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, UM has been actively promoting industry-academia collaboration and enhancing technology incubation and transfer. In addition to gaining a foothold in the Greater Bay Area with its positive impact on technological innovation, the university has also been ranked among the top in the world, laying a solid foundation for the socio-economic development of Macao, which fulfills its objective to not only serve Macao, but also contribute to the development of China.

Established in Hong Kong in 2014, SenseTime is currently one of the world’s top AI company with deep roots in the academia. The company is committed to continuously improving its industry-leading AI technologies and conducting research in key areas, including perception intelligence, decision intelligence, AI-enabled content generation, and AI-enabled content enhancement. During the expo, SenseTime announced the establishment of its branch in Macao.
