The University of Macau (UM) has launched a series of training courses for owners and employees of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Macao to help these businesses survive the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The eight courses in the first, second, third, and fourth batches were very well received and the quotas were quickly filled. The last two SME training courses, namely Big Data and Technology Innovation, as well as Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, and Smart City have ended recently.

The course were co-organised by UM’s Centre for Continuing Education (CCE), Faculty of Science and Technology, and State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City. Dr Angus Cheong and Jiang Haitao, two UM alumnus who are also well-known practitioners in the industry, were the instructors of the courses. Dr Cheong is the founder of e-Research & Solutions, the first research consultancy in Macao. During the course, he discussed real-world applications of communication theories, methods, and data technology. Jiang is the founder of Aomi, a well-known delivery service platform in Macao. In his lectures, he shared his entrepreneurial experience and success stories, as well as the practical applications of big data.

The CCE is dedicated to providing quality training courses and teaching support for the general public to promote continuing education and lifelong learning in Macao. The courses aimed to help SME owners and employees learn more about the latest trends in technology and how they can apply the new technologies to improve their thinking skills and make better business decisions. The courses also increased participants’ knowledge about the SAR government’s plan to develop Macao into a smart digital city and how going high-tech might be the way forward for SMEs against this backdrop.
