The University of Macau (UM) English Debating Team recently held a two-day online debating competition. The event aimed to support the university’s effort to ensure that students keep learning amid class suspension, and to encourage debating team members to exchange ideas on current issues.

As many of the debating contests have been postponed, the team organised this online competition to help members polish their English debating skills no matter where they are. Six teams formed by debating team members participated in the event, including those who are currently on exchange in the United States. The debate topics included ‘The rise of online news media is at the expense of traditional journalism’, ‘Young patients should be given priority over elderly patients in case of an pandemic’, and ‘Forgiveness is a virtue’.

The winning team was formed by Lei Wanjun, a second-year student of the Faulty of Business Administration (FBA), the Honours College, and Cheng Yu Tung College; Luo Yi, a first-year student of the FBA and Cheong Kun Lun College; and Qian Chi, a first-year student of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and Stanley Ho East Asia College. Qian also won the Best Debater Award. The coach of the English Debating Team is Ng Chi Mei.
