The University of Macau’s (UM) Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Information and Communication Technology Office, and Centre for Science and Engineering Promotion under the Macao Base for Primary and Secondary STEM Education recently co-organised the UM Mobile APP Development Competition 2019. Participating teams were required to use data available on the Open Data Application Programming Interface (API) Platform to develop innovative Apps. The competition aimed to seek innovative solutions to challenges associated with living and learning on the campus. A total of 12 teams received awards at the competition.

The competition was divided into two stages, a proposal stage and a final stage. Awards were presented to outstanding projects in three categories, namely UM Fitness, UM Smart Energy, and UM Job Hunter. The UM ‘Team A’ won the first prize in the UM Fitness category for their App that helps students make friends and organise sports-related information. The UM ‘Team B’ won the first prize in the UM Smart Energy category for their App that uses speech recognition and natural language processing technology to gather data related to power consumption at UM. A team from Pui Ching Middle School won the first prize in the UM Job Hunter category for their App that can help students find jobs more efficiently, assist recruiting companies in streamlining their recruitment process, and support parents to find the right tutors for their children.

Billy So, vice rector (student affairs) of UM, said at the award ceremony that the competition aimed to encourage students to put their knowledge into practice in order to prepare them for pursuing a career in the creative industries.
