Lei Chin Pang, an assistant professor in the Department of Communication, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Macau (UM), recently published a new book titled ‘Dream and the City: Anita Mui and Hong Kong Popular Culture’.

Pop stars are usually regarded as entertainers who are not worthy of serious discussion. However, star studies, as a popular area in media and cultural studies, has a history of several decades in international academia. In this new book, Dr Lei analyses the late Hong Kong superstar Anita Mui Yim-Fong’s songs, images, stage performances, media coverage as well as the stories of her fans, and explores the relationship among pop stars, society, economy and culture. The book is endorsed and recommended by numerous scholars, including Prof Lui Tai Lok, vice president of the Education University of Hong Kong; Prof Chu Yiu Wai, director of the programme in Hong Kong studies at the University of Hong Kong (HKU); and Prof Ng Chun Hung, an honorary associate professor in the Department of Sociology at HKU.

Dr Lei was born and raised in Macao. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Chengchi University in Taiwan and a PhD degree in media and cultural studies from the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom. He has published various books on popular culture and urban culture, including Invisible Macau: The Ignored City and Culture.
