The Department of Physics and Chemistry, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Macau (UM), recently held its first workshop on energy, water, and the environment. The workshop aimed to increase local secondary school students’ interest in physics and chemistry. Through the workshop, the students learned how physics and chemistry knowledge can be applied in environmental monitoring, food safety testing, sewage treatment, and seawater desalination.

Scholars who gave presentations in the workshop include Prof Pan Hui, head of the Department of Physics and Chemistry; Dr Zhou Bingpu from the department; as well as two PhD students, namely Tong Rui and Liu Dong, from the Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering (IAPME).

The students also visited the IAPME’s laboratories and the Macao Base for Primary and Secondary STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) Education.
