The University of Macau (UM) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Imperial College London (Imperial) to forge linkage and collaboration between the two universities. The MoU was signed by Prof Yonghua Song, rector of UM, and Prof Ian Walmsley, provost of Imperial College London. The two universities agreed to develop joint research and education activities in areas of mutual interest as well as to promote staff mobility.

Quality postgraduate education is essential in UM’s mission to develop into an internationally renowned institution of excellence. Last year, UM launched the UM Macao Talent Programme to encourage outstanding students and scholars to further their academic pursuit at UM. Under the programme, scholarships and assistantships have been established to support qualified candidates to pursue their PhD studies at UM.

With the new collaboration with Imperial, UM will launch a ‘1+3’ PhD scheme. Outstanding UM postgraduate students selected by UM and admitted by Imperial will have the opportunity to undertake a one-year Master of Science (MSc) programme in Imperial during their PhD study at UM. After completing the programme at Imperial, the student will obtain a MSc degree from Imperial and then return to UM to complete his or her PhD degree.

Imperial College London is widely recognised as one of the best public research institutions in UK and among the top 10 higher education institutions in the world, specialising in science, engineering, medicine and business. Imperial possesses nine campuses, 17,000 students and 8,000 staff. The institution ranks No 8 in the QS World University Rankings 2019 and holds a leading position in the aforementioned disciplines globally.
