A delegation led by National People’s Congress Social Development Affairs Committee Vice Chairman Ren Xianliang, who is also the president of the China Federation of Internet Societies, visited the University of Macau (UM). The delegation was warmly received by Yonghua Song, rector of UM, who is also the director of UM’s State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City, as well as Vice Rector Lionel Ni. Both parties held a meeting on smart city development. Ren praised UM for its research achievements and expressed hope that the federation and UM would increase collaboration on the development of internet technologies. During the visit, Song told the guests about UM’s major milestones, campus development, academic achievements, and the four reasons that make UM a unique university: its location in a special administrative region, its special mission, special status, and unique model of education. Jia Weijia, chair professor of UM’s Faculty of Science and Technology, who is also the director of UM’s Centre for Data Science, told the guests about the state key lab’s goals, research directions, and current development. Both parties had an in-depth discussion on smart city development in mainland China and Macao, as well as big data and mobile technologies. The delegation also visited the UM Gallery, the library, and the three state key labs.
