The University of Macau’s (UM) University Council Standing Committee today (2 February) listened to the university’s report of the latest progress in its handling of the sexual harassment incidents involving its faculty members. UM says it will accelerate the process of handling existing cases, further improve the current mechanism for disciplinary investigation, and establish specific guidelines on handling sexual harassment cases.

UM Rector Wei Zhao made a detailed report of the latest progress in the university’s handling of the sexual harassment incidents involving its faculty members. UM will accelerate the process of investigating and handling existing cases, release investigation results in due course, carefully review the current mechanism for disciplinary investigation, and strengthen the avoidance of conflicts of interest, in order to ensure fair, impartial, and independent investigation.

In 2014, UM revised the Guidelines on the Professional Conduct for the Academic Staff of the University of Macau. In order to have clearer guidelines to follow in handling sexual harassment cases, UM will study the practices of advanced countries and regions and establish specific guidelines on handling sexual harassment cases, by taking into account the actual circumstances of Macao. The guidelines will be released to all students, faculty, and administrative staff as soon as they are ready.

UM also plans to establish an Equal Opportunities Commission in the near future, with a specialist on the commission to handle relevant complaints and disputes, in order to best protect the rights and interests of students, faculty, and administrative staff.
