Several fourth-year students of the Department of Sociology, University of Macau (UM), recently co-organised a parenting talk with the Against Child Abuse (Macau) Association Child Protection Centre, to share parenting experience and teach parenting skills. The speaker stressed the importance of avoiding the tendency to impose one’s ideas on the child. He advised the audience to be patient with their children, to make allowance for the fact that a child needs time to learn from mistakes, and to put themselves in their children’s shoes, so as to make sure their children grow in a healthy and happy environment. The talk was sponsored by UM’s Pearl Jubilee College, and was very well received. Participants said they benefited a lot from the talk. One participant admitted that he indeed had never looked at things from his child’s perspective and just took it for granted that children should behave. Another participant said that she has two daughters who always compete for their attention despite their repeatedly telling the girls not to. She said she hoped the speaker could offer some effective solutions to this problem.
