Janny Leung, college master of Choi Kai Yau College at the University of Macau (UM), has been elected a fellow of the International Federation of Operational Research Societies (IFORS) in 2025. Prof Leung is the first Asian female scholar to receive this honour, in recognition of her significant contributions to international operational research and related fields.

IFORS was founded in 1959 by the national operational research societies of the UK (ORS), France (SOFRO), and the US (ORSA). Over the years, it has grown into a global alliance comprising 55 national operational research societies, with over 30,000 individual members worldwide. It aims to advance the development of operational research and promote its application around the world.

Prof Leung feels deeply honoured at being elected an IFORS Fellow and will continue to dedicate herself to promoting the development of operational research. She also encourages young people to pursue scientific research so as to benefit the community.

An expert in discrete optimisation and transport logistics, Prof Leung is dedicated to advancing research, academic exchange, and education in operational research and data analytics, and to promoting the application of operational research across various industries. Notably, Prof Leung served as the 23rd president of IFORS from 2022 to 2024, becoming the first Chinese scholar and the third Asian representative to be elected president in IFORS’ history.
