Students from five residential colleges of the University of Macau (UM) travelled to Xiushui County in Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province, to take part in a service learning programme. The UM students shared innovative learning approaches with local schools, bringing knowledge and joy to the students there. Through this experience, they also gained valuable insights, improved their skills, and achieved personal growth.

Since 2023, the Macao SAR government and the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR have been supporting the country’s rural revitalisation strategy, with Xiushui County as the focal point. This year, students from Cheng Yu Tung College, Choi Kai Yau College, Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College, Moon Chun Memorial College, and Shiu Pong College at UM travelled to Xiushui County in separate groups to engage in service learning at local schools. They led activities covering a wide range of topics, including physical education, arts and crafts, English, health and safety, Macao culture, and STEM, for the local students. They also visited local families to provide care and support for children. Additionally, the UM students visited historical and cultural sites in Xiushui to deepen their understanding of the county and China as a whole.

UM regularly organises students to participate in service learning activities in remote areas, creating opportunities for students from both the university and these areas to learn from each other. These activities help students discover their potential, increase their confidence, and enhance their learning motivation. In addition, UM plans to expand its exchange initiatives to further promote educational equity.
