A group of 11 students and faculty members from Choi Kai Yau College (CKYC) at the University of Macau (UM) went on an exchange trip to Arana College at the University of Otago in New Zealand. The trip aimed to develop students’ intercultural competence through exchange visit and experiential learning activities and strengthen cooperation between the two universities.
Garry Wong, interim college master of CKYC, said that the visit was the first reciprocal visit since the two colleges signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in late 2025 and that it marks a new chapter in their partnership. CKYC looks forward to closer cooperation with Arana College in areas such as academics, culture, and talent development, as well as cultivating students’ intercultural competence and global competitiveness.
Ruben Katigbak, warden of Arana College, said that the exchange visit was far more than a study tour; it was a shared journey of mutual learning, building connections, and developing global understanding. He added that, under the MOU, both parties will conduct more academic exchanges, cultural events, and collaborative projects.
The trip was funded by the University of Macau Development Foundation. During their time at Arana College, the CKYC members experienced a traditional Māori welcome ceremony and were impressed by the sincerity and hospitality of New Zealand’s indigenous people. They stayed at Arana College and engaged closely with local student leaders and visitors from around the world. This immersive experience enabled them to experience the residential college culture at Arana College, which emphasises independence, mutual respect, and a sense of community.
The students found the trip highly rewarding. Luo Wanyu said that sharing meals in the college dining hall and taking part in various extracurricular activities with local students and faculty fostered a strong sense of community. Cui Xuanqi noted that she had gained an understanding of the University of Otago’s teaching model and residential college education and management system through immersive campus tours and daily interactions. She added that the trip had broadened her horizons.
