Improvements in UMac
By Katy Kong

Certain improvements and acquisitions are allocated
under the responsibilities of the Central Services for this
semester.

Carrie Lei, head of Central Services, said new desks,
chairs, white boards, thermostats, LCD projection
system, audio/visual equipment, televisions and VCRs
and other maintenance are improved to enhance
teaching environment.

Dr Fan Chun Wai, an Assistant Professor of the Faculty
of Education (FED), said every classroom should install a
computer and a LCD projector to meet the IT trend and
the increasing need of students and lecturers.  "This will
assist teaching with related courseware in class," he
said.

He also suggested equipping wireless Local Area Network and Real Object Projector to facilitate students during computer classes.

Tony Sam, a lecturer of the Faculty of Business
Administration (FBA), believed there are not enough
computers and LCD projectors in classrooms. At least
one-third of the classrooms should be equipped with
them.  "This can help presentations and demonstrations.  Students will be more attentive in
class," Sam said.

Eva Cheong, a Year Two student commented positively
on the new desks and chairs at the open area outside
Tai Fung Building.  "I felt comfortable to study and meet
my friends there.   And I enjoy looking at the garden
nearby," said she.

She is also pleased with new desks, chairs and white
boards in classrooms.  "I felt disgusted with foul words
and cartoons written on old desks in the past.  It's more
relaxing to sit in front of a new desk," said Cheong.

Kaman Wong, a Year Three student, is happy with the
new thermostat near classroom doors.  "I felt so cold
when I had classes in K.C. Wong Building.  Luckily, I can
adjust the room temperature myself now," said Wong.

Conrad Vong, a UMac computer operator, suggested to
arrange a small snack counter within the campus.  "It is
inconvenient to walk down to the campus canteen
during my short breaks," he said.

Referring to this suggestion, Lei said they do not have
the intention to set up a snack bar outside the
canteen.  "We have a mini market inside the canteen
and we have no extra space to provide this service,"
she said.

Lei said they have received requests on extra parking
space. However, they are currently concerned more
about the expansion of buildings.

"Last year, we have requested the respective
government units to set up more than 20 legal
motorcycle parking spaces and 48 for vehicles," she
said.

According to Lei, the Central Services will continue to
work on improving classroom conditions.  She welcomes
any suggestions and complaints to the office email
csd.classroom@um.edu.mo.
