A delegation led by Lei Jianbin, vice chairman of the Macao Special Administrative Region Basic Law Committee of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, visited the University of Macau (UM) on 13 May and was warmly received by Yonghua Song, rector of UM. The two parties engaged in in-depth discussions on topics including the Basic Law, Constitution and Basic Law research, legal education, and the successful implementation of the ‘one country, two systems’ policy in Macao.
Song highlighted UM’s commitment to advancing education and research related to the Constitution and the Basic Law, as well as the efforts of the UM Centre for Constitutional Law and Basic Law Studies in promoting and studying the Macao Basic Law, as well as in nurturing legal professionals. He also thanked the committee for its long-standing support of UM and expressed hope for deeper cooperation in research, academic exchange, and talent development.
The delegation also toured the UM Faculty of Law to learn about its development and initiatives. Both sides exchanged views on the implementation of the Basic Law, legal and judicial cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, the design of legal studies curricula, and the cultivation of young talent. Lei praised UM for its achievements in promoting Constitution and Basic Law research, and expressed hope that the university will continue to leverage its strengths to support the stable and sustainable implementation of the ‘one country, two systems’ policy in Macao.
In addition, the delegation visited the University Gallery, where they learned about UM’s development, campus development, academic offerings, and research achievements.
