Students from the Department of Communication in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Macau (UM) achieved outstanding results at the 2025 China Daily Campus News Awards. Their graduation projects stood out among thousands of entries, earning a merit award in ‘Best in Art and Culture News Reporting’ (Chinese category) and a second runner-up award in ‘Best News Photography’ (Chinese & English category).

The China Daily Campus News Awards is one of the most significant competitions for journalism and communication students across the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan.

Mak Meng Sam and Fong Wai Leng received a merit award in the ‘Best in Art and Culture News Reporting’ category for their in-depth report on bamboo scaffolding. The report explores the challenges of preserving this traditional craft, which is recognised as an item of intangible cultural heritage in Macao. In addition, Wang Xiaoya was awarded second runner-up in the ‘Best News Photography’ category. Her work captures compelling images of a dedicated auto mechanic working in the confined space of a small workshop.
