In response to the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), and to promote intercontinental cooperation in marine research while fostering a maritime community with a shared future, the University of Macau (UM), Laoshan Laboratory in Qingdao, the Laboratory of Robotics and Engineering Systems at the University of Lisbon, Portugal, and the University of São Paulo, Brazil, have jointly established the Centre for Ocean Research between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries. The inauguration ceremony and the centre’s first academic symposium took place at UM today (21 November).
According to Yonghua Song, rector of UM, the new centre will focus on climate change and ocean circulation, marine ecosystems and fisheries resources, marine geology, marine energy, and marine technology and equipment. It aims to promote multilateral research collaboration and nurture young talent in ocean science with a global perspective.
At the centre’s first academic symposium, representatives from UM, Laoshan Laboratory, and partner institutions in Portugal and Brazil shared their latest research developments in the field of ocean science.
