Li Shaoping, deputy director and a Distinguished Professor in the State Key Laboratory for Quality Research in Chinese Medicine at the University of Macau (UM), has accepted the invitation of Elsevier, the world’s leading publisher of science and health information, to serve as a member of the Editorial Advisory Committee of Trends in Analytical Chemistry (TrAC), a top international journal in the field of analytical chemistry, for a three-year term. Prof Li is the only expert in the quality control of Chinese medicine to serve on the editorial board of TrAC, which reflects international recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of analytical Chinese medicine.

TrAC is a prestigious peer-reviewed journal of analytical chemistry. According to the Web of Science, it is ranked No 1 among 86 analytical chemistry journals indexed by the Science Citation Indexed in terms of five-year impact factor. The journal mainly publishes critical overviews of new developments in analytical chemistry, which are targeted at analytical chemists and other users of analytical techniques. These critical reviews comprise high-quality, up-to-date, and timely coverage of topics of interest in analytical chemistry, including analytical instrumentation, biomedical analysis, biomolecular analysis, biosensors, chemical analysis, chemometrics, clinical chemistry, drug discovery, environmental analysis and monitoring, food analysis, forensic science, laboratory automation, materials science, metabolomics, pesticide-residue analysis, pharmaceutical analysis, proteomics, surface science, as well as water analysis and monitoring.

A world-renowned scholar in the field of pharmaceutical analysis, Prof Li specialises in quality control and active ingredient research in traditional Chinese medicine. In recognition of his outstanding achievements in herbal glycoanalysis and the development of quality control methods for Chinese medicines, he was included on the Power List 2020: Around the World in 60 Scientists, released earlier by the Analytical Scientist.

Prof Li is the author of Pharmacological Activity-based Quality Control of Chinese Herbs, the world’s first English book on this subject. He has played a pivotal role in the establishment of a joint laboratory between UM and the United States Pharmacopoeia Convention (USP) for the development of quality standards for Chinese medicines. It is the first joint laboratory established between a university and the USP. In addition, he and his research team have developed saccharide mapping, a novel patented method for qualitative and quantitative analysis of glycans. He is currently an editor of the Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis, the associate editor-in-chief of the Chinese Journal of Pharmaceutical Analysis, and a member of the editorial boards of several top international academic journals in pharmacy, traditional Chinese medicine, and functional food.
