{"id":546712,"date":"2026-05-29T18:32:49","date_gmt":"2026-05-29T10:32:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.um.edu.mo\/news-and-press-releases\/press-release\/detail\/64108-2\/"},"modified":"2026-05-29T18:32:49","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T10:32:49","slug":"64108","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.um.edu.mo\/pt-pt\/news-and-press-releases\/press-release\/detail\/64108\/","title":{"rendered":"UM holds exhibition on Macao insect research to display around 1,400 insect specimens"},"content":{"rendered":"\n                        \n                        <p>The exhibition \u2018Rediscovering Macao\u2019s Wild: 135\nNew Insect Records \u2013 An Exhibition of the Entomological Legacy of Dr. Emmett R.\nEaston in Macao\u2019 opened today (29 May) at the University of Macau (UM) Library.\nJointly organised by the UM Centre for Macau\nStudies, the UM Alumni and Development Office, and the University of East Asia\nOpen College Students\u2019 Association, the exhibition displays around 1,400 insect\nspecimens donated by Dr. Emmett R. Easton. All are welcome to visit.<\/p><p>Speaking at the event, UM\nVice Rector Rui Martins said that the exhibition aims to reveal the diversity\nand intrinsic value of Macao\u2019s ecosystem and to enhance public awareness of\nenvironmental conservation and scientific exploration in the long term. He\nadded that the exhibition pays tribute to Dr Easton\u2019s academic achievements\nand seeks to raise awareness of Macao\u2019s ecological resources.<\/p><p>The specimens on display span 11 orders and 104 families, including 135 species\nthat were newly recorded in Macao\u2019s insect checklist. The exhibition also\nfeatures information panels and macro photographs of the specimens to enhance\nvisitors\u2019 understanding.<\/p><p>During\nhis tenure at UM in the 1990s, Dr Easton systematically initiated the investigation\nof insect fauna in Macao. He conducted extensive fieldwork in both urban and\nrural areas across the city and amassed a valuable collection of insect\nspecimens, laying a critical foundation for entomology and ecological\nresearch in Macao. Upon leaving Macao in 1999, Dr\nEaston donated a portion of his insect specimens to UM. Over the following two\ndecades, while residing in Hawaii, he continued his research on insect\ntaxonomy and biodiversity. In his final years, he generously donated his entire\ncollection to UM, including insect specimens, academic publications, and\nresearch manuscripts. Dr Easton passed away\nin 2025 at the age of 87.<\/p><p>The exhibition is on\ndisplay in the Exhibition Hall of the UM Wu Yee Sun Library (E2-G007).
