{"id":545542,"date":"2026-05-27T17:47:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-27T09:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.um.edu.mo\/news-and-press-releases\/press-release\/detail\/64097-2\/"},"modified":"2026-05-27T17:47:00","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T09:47:00","slug":"64097","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.um.edu.mo\/pt-pt\/news-and-press-releases\/press-release\/detail\/64097\/","title":{"rendered":"UM research team maps global patent landscape of optogenetics to facilitate clinical translation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n                        \n                        <p>A research team led by Professor Hu Yuanjia in the\nInstitute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS) and the State Key Laboratory of\nMechanism and Quality of Chinese Medicine at the University of Macau (UM), in\ncollaboration with Zhang Yanfei, investigator at the Tianjin Institute of\nIndustrial Biotechnology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has made new\nprogress in analysing the global patent landscape of optogenetics. The team has\nsystematically mapped the technological evolution, milestone patents, industry\ncompetition, key challenges, clinical breakthroughs, and translational\nprospects in the field, providing insights that may inform the development of\nnovel, clinically applicable therapeutic approaches. The research findings have\nbeen published in the academic journal <i>Nature Biotechnology<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Optogenetics is a biotechnology that uses photosensitive\nproteins to enable precise regulation of cellular activities, allowing for the\nmodulation of specific biological processes on a millisecond timescale and at\nthe single-cell level. Initially used primarily in neuroscience research,\noptogenetics has gradually expanded in recent years to include synthetic\nbiology, natural product biosynthesis, and clinical medicine. With advances in\nphotosensitive protein engineering and gene delivery systems, optogenetics has\nentered multiple clinical trials, particularly showing strong translational\npotential in the treatment of retinal diseases. However, no\noptogenetics-related products have yet been approved for marketing, suggesting\nthat critical bottlenecks remain in translating this technology from basic\nresearch into industrial and clinical applications. As an important bridge\nbetween technological innovation and industrial applications, patents can\nsystematically reflect technological evolution, innovation strategies, and\nindustrial competition, making them a key data resource for identifying\ntranslational barriers and guiding research and development.<\/p>\n\n<p>Based on a systematic analysis of 332 patent families,\nthe research team found that after a period of sustained growth, the number of\noptogenetics patent applications peaked in 2019, before experiencing a notable\ndecline. Blue light-activated optogenetic tools accounted for 41% of all\ninnovations in terms of technological composition, and have been widely applied\nin clinical medicine and cytobiology. As of the end of 2023, 11 clinical trials\nhad been registered, with a sustained focus on the treatment of retinal\ndiseases. This represents the most promising clinical breakthrough for\noptogenetics. However, the decline in patent applications suggests deeper\nobstacles in the process of industrialisation. At the technical level, existing\noptogenetic systems still face inherent limitations in tissue penetration,\nphotosensitive protein performance, and long-term expression stability.\nMeanwhile, safety data for human applications remain insufficient, and adaptive\nregulatory frameworks across different technology categories have yet to be\nestablished, and ethical concerns are intensifying the challenges of clinical translation.<\/p>\n\n<p>Breakthroughs in this field may no longer depend solely\non the optimisation and iteration of individual technologies, but also on\nmultidisciplinary integration. The combination of cutting-edge technologies\nsuch as the precise regulation of calcium channels, upconversion luminescence\nmaterials, and organoid systems can enable optogenetics to overcome existing\nbottlenecks and explore new therapeutic paradigms with clinical feasibility. In\naddition, the latest data indicates that, following a continuous decline throughout\n2023, the number of optogenetics-related patent publications increased rapidly in\n2024 and 2025. Notably, a few new patents have been published in the field of\noncology, involving light-controlled immune cell infiltration into solid tumours\nand near-infrared light-regulated STING-related innate immune pathways,\nsuggesting potential applications in tumour immune regulation. According to the\nlatest statistics, the number of related clinical trials has further increased\nto 16. Among them, MCO-010 developed by Nanoscope Therapeutics is leading in\ndevelopment, having completed a Phase IIb clinical trial and initiated a\nrolling submission of a Biologics License Application (BLA) to the US Food and\nDrug Administration (FDA).<\/p>\n\n<p>The corresponding authors of this study are Prof Hu and\nDr Zhang Yanfei, while the co-first authors are Zhang Yufan, a PhD student at UM,\nand Lyu Liyang, a PhD graduate of UM (currently an associate professor in the\nSchool of International Pharmaceutical Business at China Pharmaceutical\nUniversity).
