The Faculty of Arts and\nHumanities (FAH) at the University of Macau (UM) held the Seventh UM Language\nand Culture Day on 1 April, with the aim of celebrating UM\u2019s 45th anniversary, promoting\nthe preservation of language and culture, and fostering intercultural\ncommunication. Students and faculty members from various countries and regions\nexperienced UM\u2019s cultural diversity through a vibrant programme of performances\nand workshops.<\/p>

The Language and Culture\nDay is a signature event of FAH. It aims to promote the preservation of various\nmother tongues and develop students\u2019 critical thinking skills by celebrating cultural\ndiversity. In his speech, Zhang Jian, associate dean of FAH, quoted four\nsayings of Confucius to illustrate the close relationship between moral\nintegrity and language in Chinese culture: \u2018The virtuous will be sure to speak\ncorrectly, but those whose speech is good may not always be virtuous\u2019; \u2018Fine words\nand an insinuating appearance are seldom associated with virtue\u2019; \u2018The superior\nman wishes to be slow in his speech and earnest in his conduct\u2019; and \u2018I would\nprefer not speaking\u2019. He encouraged participants to explore language and\nculture in depth, embrace their charm, and appreciate the thoughts and ideas conveyed\nin the Chinese classics, thereby enriching their understanding of language and\nculture.<\/p>

Under the theme \u2018Cherish\nMother Tongues, Embrace All Cultures\u2019, UM students and faculty presented a variety\nof cultural performances. These included the renditions of the Irish folk song \u2018The\nSpirit of Ireland\u2019, the Chinese pop song \u2018The World\u2019s Gift to Me\u2019, the Chinese\nclassic song \u2018Colourful Clouds Chasing the Moon\u2019 performed in four languages, the\nJapanese song \u2018Koi\u2019, and the English song \u2018What a Wonderful World\u2019. The\nperformances showcased the unique cultures of China, Japan, Europe, and\nAmerica. The event also featured a \u2018Cultural Treasure Hunt\u2019 and themed workshops,\nallowing participants to experience the charm of different languages, cultures,\nphilosophies, and histories.<\/p>

The opening ceremony was\nalso officiated by Xu Jie, dean of FAH; Li Defeng, associate dean of FAH;\nJoaquim Kuong, assistant dean of FAH; Zhang Yue, assistant dean of FAH; Yang\nLiu, college master of Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam College; Katrine Wong,\ndirector of the Centre for Teaching and Learning Enhancement; and Paul Pang,\ndean of students.<\/p>
