The Faculty of Arts and\nHumanities (FAH) of the University of Macau (UM) held the Macao Humanities\nForum on 4 February, where Charles Sanft, professor of history at the\nUniversity of Tennessee in Knoxville, US, and guest professor in the Institute\nfor Sinology at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in Germany,\ndelivered a lecture titled \u2018Land of Marvels: Twenty Poems about Dunhuang\u2019. The\nlecture was well attended by students and faculty members.<\/p>

In his welcome address,\nJoaquim Kuong, assistant dean of FAH, noted that the lecture focused on Chinese\nhistory and poetry. He highlighted that both Macao and Dunhuang are cultural\ncrossroads with plentiful artistic and literary legacies, and have been significant\ndriving forces in the development of Chinese culture. Zhang Yue, assistant dean\nof FAH, introduced Prof Sanft\u2019s academic background and achievements. A world-renowned\nsinologist, Prof Sanft is the author of two monographs\u2014Communication and\nCooperation in Early Imperial China: Publicizing the Qin Dynasty<\/i> and Literate Community\nin Early Imperial China: The Northwestern Frontier in Han Times<\/i>\u2014as well as a substantial body\nof work on ancient Chinese history and culture. His contributions have enriched\nthe international community\u2019s understanding of and appreciation for ancient\nChinese history and culture.<\/p>

During the lecture, Prof\nSanft first introduced the theme \u2018Twenty Poems about Dunhuang\u2019 by showing old\nphotographs of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang. He coined the term \u2018topophilia\u2019 and\nemphasised the emotional connection between the poet and the place, highlighting\nthat such a connection is inseparable from historical context. Prof Sanft then\nmoved on to the preface of the poetic sequence Twenty Poems about Dunhuang<\/i>,\nwhich marks the beginning of the poet\u2019s journey in Dunhuang. He provided a detailed\ncommentary on a selection of poems, exploring both their literal content and\ntheir metaphorical representations of social reality. He also noted that the\npoetic sequence, in which the first and last poems echo each other, reflects\nthe poet\u2019s inner journey in Dunhuang. This demonstrates that the poet found inspiration\nthere and formed an attachment to the place. In his concluding remarks, Zhang\nsaid that Prof Sanft had delivered a special lecture on Chinese poetry that transcended\nconventional historical and literary analysis by being grounded in regional\nparticularities. He added that the lecture had opened up new perspectives on traditional\nliterary studies.<\/p>

During the Q&A\nsession, Prof Sanft engaged in in-depth discussions with UM students and\nfaculty on topics including poetry translation, the features of regional\nliterary, and the structure of poetic sequence. He emphasised that effective\ntranslation hinges on a balance between literal translation and necessary\nannotation, and that translators should convey literal information clearly,\nwhile leaving space for readers to interpret metaphors. He went on to explain\nthat, unlike linear narratives, Chinese poetry sequences are characterised by\nmultiformity rather than a single, sequential path.<\/p>

This was the third lecture\nof the Macao Humanities Forum for the 2025\/2026 academic year. Every year, the\nforum invites distinguished scholars in different fields of the humanities to\nshare their latest research findings with students and faculty members in\nMacao. Previous lectures of the forum have covered a wide range of topics,\nincluding literature, linguistics, history, translation, and arts.<\/p>
