{"id":441251,"date":"2025-09-04T18:38:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-04T10:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.um.edu.mo\/news-and-press-releases\/campus-news\/detail\/61911-2\/"},"modified":"2025-09-11T15:24:37","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T07:24:37","slug":"61911","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.um.edu.mo\/pt-pt\/news-and-press-releases\/campus-news\/detail\/61911\/","title":{"rendered":"UM produz novos desenvolvimentos na terapia de precis\u00e3o contra o cancro baseada em pontos de carbono"},"content":{"rendered":"\n                        \n                        <p>A research team led by Chair Professor Tang Zikang and Distinguished\nProfessor Sun Handong in the Institute of Applied Physics and Materials\nEngineering (IAPME) at the University of Macau (UM), in collaboration with a\nresearch team led by Chair Professor Chuxia Deng in the Faculty of Health\nSciences (FHS), has developed novel carbon quantum dots (CQDs) that exhibit\nhigh electron spin and optical relaxation. These CQDs demonstrate exceptional\nmagnetic resonance imaging (MRI) capabilities and excellent thermoelectric\ncatalytic performance in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window. This\ninnovation proposes a novel, precise MRI-guided approach to NIR-II cancer phototherapy.\nThe research has been published in the international journal <i>Nature Communications<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n<p>CQDs are emerging as promising candidates in the field\nof nanomedicine. They exhibit behaviours related to electron spin, relaxation,\nand migration. Thanks to their excellent biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity,\nnon-metallic CQDs are favoured for precision cancer therapy, which boasts high\ntumour targeting ability, potent tumour-killing efficacy, short treatment\ndurations, and minimal side effects on the human body. The integration of\ntherapeutic functionalities with MRI components is a promising goal for the\nclinical application of CQDs. Yet, the toxicity of Gd-based contrast agents (CAs)\nand the low relaxivity and stability of organic small molecule CAs restrict the\nclinical applications of current MRI CAs. Therefore, it is imperative to\ndevelop high-relaxivity carbon-based CAs, such as non-metallic CQDs. However,\nachieving phototherapy in the NIR-II window using MRI with non-metallic CQDs is\nhighly challenging. In previous research, the research team addressed the issues\nof the low NIR-II absorption coefficient and optical conversion efficiency of CQDs\nthrough polaron engineering. Their findings were published in the prestigious\njournal <i>Science Advances<\/i>. The full\nversion of the article is available at: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.adn7896\">https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.adn7896<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>This study focuses on introducing magnetic edge states\ninto CQDs to enable both MRI and NIR-II cancer treatment, thus demonstrating the\npotential of CQDs for precision cancer therapy. To this end, the research team synthesised\nhighly paramagnetic CQDs using a bottom-up approach based on free radical\npolymerisation. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and transient\nabsorption spectra revealed the magnetic and optical properties, including the\npresence of fast spin and optical relaxation times of unpaired electrons\nbetween two edge nitrogen nuclei at room temperature. Controlling the electron\nrelaxation and migration behaviour of the magnetic edge states enabled the CQDs\nto exhibit notable MRI T<sub>1<\/sub> imaging ability (r\u2081 = 270 mM\u207b\u00b9s\u207b\u00b9) and\nNIR-II photo-thermoelectric catalytic properties in an aqueous soluation.\nFurthermore, combining CQDs with protein macromolecules resulted in the\nformation of protein coronas, enabling the passive enrichment of the CQDs in\ntumour tissues. Finally, the team successfully developed a precise MRI-guided approach\nto NIR-II cancer phototherapy. Through the synergistic control of structure, ligands,\nand environment, the team achieved electron relaxation and migration properties\nthat surpass those of metallic materials. This provides a new paradigm for studying\nefficient spin averaging, hyperfine splitting, and zero-field splitting in\ncarbon-based materials, thereby advancing the development of nanomedicine and\nspintronics.<\/p>\n\n<p>The corresponding authors of the study are Prof Sun Handong,\nProf Tang Zikang, Prof Chuxia Deng, and Zhang Tesen, a research assistant in IAPME.\nThe first author is Tesen Zhang.
