{"id":419686,"date":"2025-06-30T14:53:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-30T06:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.um.edu.mo\/news-and-press-releases\/campus-news\/detail\/61435-2\/"},"modified":"2025-07-04T19:14:40","modified_gmt":"2025-07-04T11:14:40","slug":"61435","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.um.edu.mo\/pt-pt\/news-and-press-releases\/campus-news\/detail\/61435\/","title":{"rendered":"UM produz novo progresso na angiografia cerebral profunda"},"content":{"rendered":"\n                        \n                        <p>A research team led by\nAssociate Professor Liu Tzu-Ming and Research Assistant Professor Xu Changhuo in\nthe Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at the University of Macau (UM), in\ncollaboration with a team led by Distinguished Visiting Professor Tang Ben Zhong\nand Research Professor Lam Wing Yip at the Hong Kong University of Science and\nTechnology (HKUST), has made significant progress in deep-brain angiography.\nThe team has successfully optimised nonlinear optical (NLO) imaging technology\nto capture high-resolution images of the deep-brain vasculature (up to 500\u03bcm)\nusing extremely low laser power. This significantly reduces the risk of\nphotodamage during diagnostic procedures. This breakthrough offers a new\napproach to the early screening of subclinical cerebrovascular diseases, such\nas microaneurysms. The research has been published in the prestigious\ninternational journal <i>Advanced Materials<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Theodore\nH. Maiman invented the first ruby laser in 1960, marking the dawn of laser\ntechnology. Scientists later discovered that when lasers interact with quartz\ncrystals, a series of NLO phenomena occur. Among these, third-harmonic\ngeneration (THG) has drawn significant attention due to its signal enhancement\nproperties at interfaces. THG is a four-wave mixing process that can convert\n1,300nm incident light to a 433nm THG output signal. This technology is widely\nused for label-free imaging of biological tissue owing to its high tissue\npenetration depth and detection sensitivity. However, traditional THG materials\nhave several limitations, including low efficiency, the difficulty of\ncollecting backward signals, and poor biocompatibility. These limitations\nhinder their application in brain science. Furthermore, increasing the laser\npower to achieve satisfactory backward THG (BTHG) output can cause irreversible\nphotodamage to tissue, which has long hindered progress in <i>in vivo<\/i> imaging research. Achieving a balance between efficiency\nand safety remains a critical challenge in the field.<\/p>\n\n<p>To\naddress these limitations, the research team designed a series of organic\nsmall-molecule probes. By optimising the molecular packing of \u03c0-electron and controlling\nthe mesoscale morphology, the team identified an efficient THG probe named \u2018OTBP\u2019.\nResults demonstrated that OTBP self-assembled into stable nanocrystals with a\nhigh refractive index (n=1.78), significantly enhancing BTHG signal output.\nUnder low-power laser excitation (60mW, pulse energy 0.75nJ), the technology achieved\nhigh-contrast imaging of deep-brain vasculature (500\u03bcm) in mice. This enabled\nthe visualisation of microvessels as small as 6.8\u03bcm in diameter, with a\nsignal-to-noise ratio of 143. Compared to traditional CT and MRI angiography,\nthis new technology offers high resolution and minimal invasiveness. It can\naddress the issue of low resolution in conventional methods and complement\nexisting angiography techniques. The technology also shows promise in the early\ndetection of conditions such as stroke and aneurysms, advancing the development\nof minimally invasive diagnostics.<\/p>\n\n<p>The\ncorresponding authors of the study are Liu Tzu-Ming Liu, Xu Changhuo, Lam Wing\nYip, and Tang Ben Zhong. The co-first authors are Du Lidong, a doctoral student\nfrom UM FHS, and Shen Hanchen, a doctoral graduate from HKUST. UM doctoral students\nZhou Qingqing and Ye Xuhao, along with other team members also made significant\ncontributions to the study.
